Most
of the routes travel between Bergen, and Kirkness. Some
Itineraries travel from Bergen to Trondheim. The ships carry
between 200 and 674 passengers. Cruising the coast of Norway
allows you to experience the 'land of the mid-night sun',
strikingly beautiful fjords, and the oportunity to visit
people of the lappland and sami cultures.
Hurtigruten,
the traditional Norwegian name for this service translates roughly
to 'Fast Route' in English. The primary purpose of these ships
is to move the mail, and Norwegians from place to place. Because
this is the nature of the service, you will have the opportunity
to visit many ports of call. However, the stay in each port can
vary in time tremendously. The snow covered mountain peaks, calm
water cruising, and the chance to enjoy this part of the world
will hopefully make up for some of the shorter port stays.
The
ship you chose to travel in could be one of the newer ships added
to the fleet. For example, M.S. Midnatsol the latest
additon, entered service in 2003.. The Contemporary ships carry
the most passengers, and offer the greatest array of on-board
amenities, including cabins for mobility impared persons.
At
the other end of the ship age spectrum is the well loved M.S.
Lofoten. If the oportunity to cruise in a small, classic ship
appeals to you Lofoten delivers. However, if luxury travel
is what you are after this is not your ship. She was built in 1964,
and has been continually re-furbished. Most of the cabins have upper
and lower berths (bunk beds), and around half the cabins boast private
facilities. She is a very small ship and offers un-parallelled intamacy.
For the ship fan, Lofoten will be a treat!
