If you are a history buff, you might enjoy a lecture presented by the on-board "riverlorian". The entertainment ranges from dancing to caberet, vauedville, jazz, and broadway style shows. If you would like to partake of the more historically acurate forms of entertainment offered, the "river queens" host sing-alongs, or, brush up on your keyboard skills and enliven the airwaves with your own musical stylings played on a calliope. |
President Hoover, President Carter, Lady Bird Johnson, Princess Margaret, Helen Hays, and Arlo Guthrie have all strolled the decks of Delta Queen. The flagship of the fleet, Delta Queen has been lovingly refurbished, and exudes the charm of a fine victorian home. The pace on board is stately, and unhurried.

Mississippi Queen has been experienced first hand by three of us here at The Cruise People. One of us was only seven years old at the time. Although the memories of the seven year old are pretty vague, the impression is lasting. She experienced a sense of wonder while visiting plantations, and a fascination with the visually available illustration of 'what makes the boat go'. Sitting in the aft lounge watching the paddlewheel turn was mezmerizing. 26 years ago the childrens programmes were minimal.

Today Delta Queen Steamboat Company has introduced "Riverbonding" adventures for families. Offered during school and American holidays, such as Christmas and Thanksgiving "Riverbonding" adventures offer a variety of family 'perks'. This will of course tear your children away from the computer and video games, and allow them to interact with you. Before you board the boat, you may select two board games from a list of twenty, upon arrival, the games will be awaiting you in your cabin. Be sure you chose games you don't already have. You get to bring the games home after your cruise. Every night you will find a plate of cookies, and glass of milk in your cabin. If filet mignon is a bit too fancy for your children's palate, worry not...simply ask the chef, and something will be prepared for your child. On board there are a variety of old fashioned amusements such as childrens parties, classic family movies, crafts, kit flying from the stern of the boat, and slumber parties. The children will also have the chance to tour the engine room and learn how a steamengine works. |
Most of the cabins in American Queen are stunningly beautiful, providing a luxurious retreat from which you may relax in solitude and watch the banks of the river slip past. American Queen itinerary gives you the opportunity to experience two holidays in one. In one week you have the option of combining a three or four day cruise, with a three or four day stay in New Orleans. |
